The 7-day Rongai Route is a highly regarded trekking route for ascending Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. This path offers a gradual ascent and captivating views of the mountain from its north side. Starting at the Rongai Gate, the journey spans various landscapes, encompassing lush forest, enchanting moorland, and the awe-inspiring alpine desert before culminating at Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters.

Itinerary: This comprehensive itinerary entails six days of trekking and one dedicated to acclimatization. Carefully designed to allow climbers to acclimatize to the altitude, it significantly enhances the prospects of successfully reaching the summit. Suitable for both beginners and experienced climbers, the Rongai Route necessitates a good level of physical fitness and unwavering mental determination.

Guides and Support: Led by experienced guides and supported by dedicated porters, trekkers can focus on the journey while their gear is carried. Trekking days typically range from 3 to 7 hours, with the exception of the summit day, which can be an epic 15-hour adventure.

Conclusion: The trek culminates at the Marangu Gate, where triumphant climbers are awarded their well-deserved summit certificates. It’s a moment to celebrate with the dedicated team who made the journey possible and to reflect on the incredible achievement of conquering Africa’s highest peak.

Day 1

  • Arrival
  • ✈️ Airport Pick-Up: We’ll greet you at Arusha or Kilimanjaro airport and provide transportation, including your return trip to the airport.
  • 🏨 Hotel Accommodation: Enjoy your first night in a comfortable hotel.

🛌🏻 Spend the night in a hotel, the same one as your first night’s stay.

🚌 Note: Transportation to the airport is included after your last night spent in the hotel.

Day 2

  • Rongai Gate (1,950m) to Simba Camp (2,650m)
  • After breakfast, drive to the Rongai Gate on the northeastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Complete registration formalities and meet the rest of the climbing crew.
  • Start the trek through the lush rainforest, where you can spot wildlife along the way, and continue until you reach Simba Camp. Simba Camp is situated in a scenic area with excellent views of the plains.

Day 3

  • Simba Camp (2,650m) to Second Cave Camp (3,450m)
  • Leave Simba Camp after breakfast, continuing through the moorland zone.
  • Pass the Second Cave en route to the campsite.
  • Enjoy breathtaking views of Kibo Peak and the eastern ice fields.

Day 4

  • Second Cave Camp (3,450m) to Kikelelwa Camp (3,600m)
  • Leave Simba Camp after breakfast, continuing through the moorland zone.
  • Pass the Second Cave en route to the campsite.
  • Enjoy breathtaking views of Kibo Peak and the eastern ice fields.


Day 5

  • Kikelelwa Camp (3,600m) to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)
  • Start the day’s hike, gradually ascending through the alpine desert zone.
  • Arrive at Kikelelwa Camp, surrounded by stunning mountain scenery.
  • Rest, enjoy the views, and acclimatize to the higher altitude.

Day 6

  • Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m) to Kibo Hut (4,700m)
  • Begin the day with a steady ascent to Kibo Hut, the base camp for summiting.
  • Traverse rocky terrain and arrive at the hut in the afternoon.
  • Rest, hydrate, and have an early dinner before the summit attempt.

Day 7

  • Kibo Hut (4,700m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and Horombo Hut (3,720m)
  • Wake up around midnight to start the final ascent to the summit.
  • Trek through the steep and challenging scree slopes of Gilman’s Point.
  • Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, for a triumphant moment.
  • Descend to Horombo Hut, passing through various ecological zones, and celebrate your accomplishment while resting at the hut for the night.

Day 8

  • Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Marangu Gate (1,860m) and Moshi
  • Descend through the lush rainforest, enjoying the rich flora and fauna.
  • Reach the Marangu Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates.
  • Bid farewell to your climbing crew and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi.
  • Rest, relax, and celebrate your successful Mount Kilimanjaro expedition.

Incredible experience made all the more special by Honest and his team We couldn’t endorse Honest and his team more. Immediately after meeting, we were made to feel extremely welcome, safe, and informed, which remained throughout the duration of our adventure.We first climbed Mount Meru where Honest took us to spots to see Giraffes in the wild as well as many monkeys, warthogs, and other animals. This served as the perfect preparation for Kilimanjaro.The team we had for Kili was exemplary. The whole time there was a real bond between the entire group. We’d regularly spend time beyond meal times talking with Honest and Justin about life and the adventure we were currently on which was extremely insightful. The food also far surpassed our expectations with exactly the type of fuel we needed such as pastas, fruits, eggs, etc. Our chef was called the “stomach engineer” for very appropriate reasons!Throughout the climb, Honest ensured we maintained an enjoyable tempo and there wasn’t a moment we felt too slow or rushed. The culmination of this was being fresh for summit morning and being the first team to summit, just as the sun was rising. With minor altitude sickness in the team on descent, Honest gave appropriate nutrition and instruction to manage the situation. Thereafter, there was a party atmosphere within the group, even having music and dancing on the last morning of the descent where we exchanged gifts and final stories.Overall, it was the trip of a lifetime made all the more special by Honest and his team. Perfectly prepared and executed that set us up for success. The relationship with Honest was tremendous, so much so that we are still in regular contact today and when a return trip is due, there are no hesitations in going straight to Zanzi Trekking and Safaris.
