An Adventure Through Kilimanjaro’s West with Optimal Acclimatization

The Lemosho Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west, offering a chance to explore the captivating Shira Plateau with its iconic Cathedral Peak and the magnificent Shira Caldera. This journey takes trekkers through a low-traffic, scenic route until it merges with the Machame route. From there, Lemosho shares the path through key points like Lava Tower, Barranco, and Barafu, forming the southern circuit.

Itinerary Choices: While the minimum required duration is seven days, opting for the recommended eight-day itinerary allows for crucial acclimatization, improving summit success. Like the Machame Route, Lemosho is a visually spectacular journey that offers diverse landscapes and the chance to encounter Colobus monkeys, diverse bird species, and small jackals foraging during the dry season.

The Lemosho Route promises an immersive Kilimanjaro adventure with its natural wonders, stunning vistas, and the advantage of ample acclimatization, ensuring a memorable journey to the summit.

Day 1

  • Arrival
  • ✈️ Airport Pick-Up: We’ll greet you at Arusha or Kilimanjaro airport and provide transportation, including your return trip to the airport.
  • 🏨 Hotel Accommodation: Enjoy your first night in a comfortable hotel.

🛌🏻 Spend the night in a hotel, the same one as your first night’s stay.

🚌 Note: Transportation to the airport is included after your last night spent in the hotel.

Day 2

  • Moshi/Arusha to Lemosho Gate to Big Tree Campsite.
  • We will pick you up from your hotel and transport you to Londorosi Gate for registration.
  • After registration, board the vehicle again and drive to Lemosho Gate. From this point, you will commence the trek across undisturbed montane forest, adorned with black and white colobus monkeys, and reach the camp where you’ll have dinner and spend the night.

Day 3

  • Big tree campsite to Shira one campsite
  • This is an acclimatization day because you will gain over 650m by starting walking across a beautiful valley outside Shira caldera rim (3600m). After few hours you will reach into Shira caldera. A high altitude desert, Shira is the one among the three peaks which erupted in Kilimanjaro ecosystem. The peak collapsed and formed a crater which eventually became filled with the lava flow from Kibo peak. Its rim is eroded and blasted away by weather and volcanic action. Camp and overnight at 3500m elevation at the Shira one campsite

Day 4

  • Shira one campsite to Shira two campsite
  • This day you will trek to east across Shira plateau visiting (Cathedral peak 3850m) for acclimatization. Reaching at this peak you will find spectacular views of Mt. Meru and Kibo Peak.Then you will continue trekking to Shira two camp where you will stay for dinner and overnight

Day 5

  • Shira two campsite to Barranco campsite
  • This is long acclimatization day. You will have an early breakfast then trek east to a junction leading to Lava tower rock 4600m for acclimatization. Afterwards, you will descend down to Barranco campsite for dinner and overnight.

Day 6

  • Barranco campsite to Karanga campsite
  • Today is short day of trekking. In the morning you will start climbing Barranco wall and reach 4200m for acclimatization and continue crossing ridges and valleys to Karanga campsite for hot lunch. After lunch you will have a bit of rest and get another acclimatization of trekking up the scree hills towards the Southern ice field. You will then return to the camp for dinner and overnight

Day 7

  • Karanga campsite to Barafu campsite

Today the trek up to the Barafu ridge campsite is difficult because of altitude. The walk take few hours because of short distance but is steep which required a slow pace to avoid fatigue. You will walk across an alpine desert with strong, cold winds blowing down from Kibo peak and its glaciers. You will have an early dinner at the elevation of 4620 meters then rest until midnight.

Day 8

  • Barafu hut campsite to Uhuru peak to Mweka hut campsite

Wake up at midnight to a light breakfast and then prepare for your summit ascent. The goal is to climb before dawn so that you can reach Uhuru Peak shortly before or after sunrise. Departure for the summit is at 12:00AM. switchback up steep scree or possibly snow, and reach Stella Point on the crater rim (5,861 m/18,640 ft) between 4 and 5 AM. At this point you will be having the views of the fabled crater and its icecaps facing you. Then after 1 hour of hiking along the Kibo crater rim near the celebrated snows takes you to Kilimanjaro true summit, Uhuru Peak here you will spend time for taking photos. After your summit activities, you will descend back to the Barafu Huts campsite, for lunch, rest, collect your gear, and continue down through moorland and heath zone to Mweka Huts campsite. Dinner and overnight at Mweka hut campsite

Day 9

  • Mweka hut campsite to Mweka gate

Today is your last day on the mountain. After breakfast, you will descend down to mweka gate walking across montane forest. This descent will take 3-4 hours. Incredible experience made all the more special by Honest and his team We couldn’t endorse Honest and his team more. Immediately after meeting, we were made to feel extremely welcome, safe, and informed, which remained throughout the duration of our adventure.We first climbed Mount Meru where Honest took us to spots to see Giraffes in the wild as well as many monkeys, warthogs, and other animals. This served as the perfect preparation for Kilimanjaro.The team we had for Kili was exemplary. The whole time there was a real bond between the entire group. We’d regularly spend time beyond meal times talking with Honest and Justin about life and the adventure we were currently on which was extremely insightful. The food also far surpassed our expectations with exactly the type of fuel we needed such as pastas, fruits, eggs, etc. Our chef was called the “stomach engineer” for very appropriate reasons!Throughout the climb, Honest ensured we maintained an enjoyable tempo and there wasn’t a moment we felt too slow or rushed. The culmination of this was being fresh for summit morning and being the first team to summit, just as the sun was rising. With minor altitude sickness in the team on descent, Honest gave appropriate nutrition and instruction to manage the situation. Thereafter, there was a party atmosphere within the group, even having music and dancing on the last morning of the descent where we exchanged gifts and final stories.Overall, it was the trip of a lifetime made all the more special by Honest and his team. Perfectly prepared and executed that set us up for success. The relationship with Honest was tremendous, so much so that we are still in regular contact today and when a return trip is due, there are no hesitations in going straight to Zanzi Trekking and Safaris.
