Porters on Kilimanjaro: How KPAP Protects the People Behind Your Summit
When you trek Kilimanjaro, dozens of porters work tirelessly behind the scenes — carrying loads, pitching tents, and cooking meals so you can focus on the summit. The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) exists to make sure those porters are treated fairly and safely.
What Is KPAP?
The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) is an initiative under the Kilimanjaro Responsible Trekking Organization (KRTO), a non-profit established in 2003 with support from the International Mountain Explorers Connection (IMEC).
KPAP works to improve the welfare and working conditions of porters on Mount Kilimanjaro — the unsung heroes who carry equipment, set up camps, and support climbers throughout every trekking expedition.
Fair Wages
Monitoring ensures porters are paid fairly and aren’t exploited by unethical operators.
Manageable Loads
Load weights are documented and capped so porters aren’t physically overburdened.
Proper Meals
Porters must receive adequate food and shelter throughout every expedition.
Suitable Equipment
Partners are held accountable to ensure porters have appropriate gear for Kilimanjaro’s harsh conditions.
How the KPAP Partner System Works
KPAP maintains an official KPAP Partner List of approved tour companies that meet its porter welfare standards. This helps travellers identify ethical operators, promotes transparency, and encourages companies to follow responsible trekking practices.
KPAP staff visit expeditions in progress, observe working conditions directly, and collect information from both guides and porters. Key factors documented include wages, load weights, access to food and shelter, and overall working conditions.
A Collaborative Approach to Mountain Ethics
KPAP collaborates with tour companies, guides, porters, national park authorities, and tourism stakeholders to promote responsible trekking practices across the entire sector. Companies that meet KPAP standards are recognised as official KPAP partners — a genuine mark of commitment, not just a marketing badge.
“Responsible tourism protects porters and preserves nature for the future of humanity.”

When booking your Kilimanjaro trek, check whether your operator appears on the official KPAP Partner List. Choosing a listed company means your adventure directly supports fair wages and humane working conditions for the people who make your summit possible.
At Zanzi Trekking, we follow every KPAP guideline and welcome monitoring visits — because transparency isn’t just good practice, it’s the right thing to do.
